An electric inset fire is the most effective way to breathe new life into a tired fireplace without the upheaval of major construction. Designed specifically to slot into standard UK fireplace openings or pre-constructed wall recesses, these units provide the comfort of a glowing hearth with none of the logistical challenges associated with gas or solid fuel.
At Glowing Flames, our collection of inset electric fires focuses on "Visual Realism." Using high-definition LED technology and 3D flame projections, these fires replicate the rhythmic flicker of a wood fire, allowing you to enjoy a cosy atmosphere at the flick of a switch.
The beauty of the electric inset fire lies in its simplicity. If you have an existing chimney breast that is no longer in use, or a standard 16-inch opening, these fires are designed to "slot in" perfectly.
As long as there is a standard UK 3-pin socket nearby, installation is a straightforward DIY task. There is no need for HETAS or Gas Safe engineers, meaning you can transform your living room, bedroom, or dining area in a single afternoon.
Our range covers the full spectrum of interior design:
Do I need a chimney for an electric inset fire?
No. While they are designed to fit into chimney openings, they do not require any venting. If you don't have a chimney, you can simply build a shallow stud-wall "false chimney breast" to house the fire.
How deep does the opening need to be?
Most standard inset fires require a depth of around 75mm to 100mm. However, we also stock "slimline" models for homes where the wall cavity is particularly shallow.
Are they safe to leave on overnight?
All our electric fires come with built-in thermal cut-off switches and overheat protection. While they are incredibly safe, we generally recommend using the timer function to ensure the fire switches off automatically once you’ve drifted off to sleep.
Is the heat output adjustable?
Yes. Almost all our models feature at least two heat settings (typically 1kW and 2kW) and a built-in thermostat that maintains your chosen room temperature with precision.
Can I install an electric inset fire into a wooden surround?
Yes, you can. Unlike gas or wood-burning stoves, electric inset fires produce heat that is blown forward into the room via a fan. This means the casing remains relatively cool, making them safe to pair with timber mantels and MDF fireplace suites. Always ensure you follow the specific clearance distances mentioned in the manufacturer’s manual.
What is a ‘spacer kit’ and do I need one?
A spacer kit is a frame that fits around the back of the fire. It is used if your wall cavity or chimney opening isn't quite deep enough for the fire to sit flush. If you have a very shallow opening, a spacer kit allows the fire to sit slightly forward, effectively turning an inset fire into a semi-recessed one.
Do electric inset fires come with a remote control?
The majority of our modern range includes a remote control as standard. This allows you to adjust the flame brightness, heat settings, and even the "crackle" volume without leaving your armchair. Some of our high-end models can even be controlled via a smartphone app.
How long do the bulbs last in an electric fire?
Most of our fires now use LED technology, which is designed to last for tens of thousands of hours. In practical terms, this means you likely won't ever need to change a "bulb" for the entire lifespan of the fire, making them far more reliable than older models that used halogen or incandescent bulbs.
Can I put a hearth in front of an electric inset fire?
While you don’t need a hearth for safety reasons (as there are no hot embers or sparks), many people choose to install one for aesthetic purposes. It helps to ground the fire and gives it that authentic, traditional fireplace appearance.
Does the fire require a dedicated electrical circuit?
For a standard 2kW electric inset fire, a normal domestic 13-amp socket is perfectly fine. However, we recommend avoiding the use of extension leads. For the safest and neatest finish, it is best to have a socket installed directly behind the fire or inside the fireplace opening.
Is there a "silent" mode for the heater?
Electric fires use a fan to distribute heat, so there will always be a very low hum when the heater is active. However, when the fire is in "flame-only" mode, it is virtually silent, allowing you to enjoy the visual atmosphere without any background noise.
What is the difference between a 'Manual' and 'Thermostatic' control?
Manual control requires you to turn the heater on and off yourself. A thermostatic control allows you to set a specific temperature (e.g., 21°C); the fire will then automatically toggle the heater on and off to maintain that exact level of warmth, saving you energy and money.
